Selling a house with back taxes in Kansas City

Behind does not mean you have to write a check before anyone will talk to you. The taxes can be paid from the sale.

This guide is part of Property taxes. Back to the homepage.

You do not pay them first

Owners wait because they think the bill has to be caught up before a sale. It does not. At a title company, liens and taxes are paid from the sale money in an order the title company handles. You get what is left.

That only works if the offer is large enough to cover what has to be paid. We will tell you if it is not.

Call with the bill, not a clean house

Bring the latest tax letter if you have it. The address is enough to start. Repairs, tenants, and stuff in the house can wait.

The company phone is (816) 429-2900. The longer page on paying taxes at closing stays at its current address.

Questions

Do I need a payoff from the county first?

It helps, and the title company will order what it needs. You do not have to become an expert before you call.

What if I also owe the mortgage?

The loan is paid at closing too, if the numbers reach it. We look at both.
