Selling a home

Selling a Kansas City house during a divorce

The house is often the last thing a couple still shares. A cash sale is one number and one date instead of months of showings.

This guide is part of Selling a home. Back to the homepage.

Who has to agree

If both names are on the deed, both people sign. If a court has given one person authority, we follow that order. We do not take sides and we do not give legal advice.

A yard sign can make a private split public. Some people want that avoided. A sale to us is not a listing.

Equity, not drama

The useful question is what each person walks away with after the loan, the taxes, and the closing. We show the offer. Your attorney or your mediator can use it. You can also get a listing opinion and compare.

You pick the closing date. That matters when one person needs to move out and the other needs the equity to land somewhere.

Questions

Can you talk to our attorneys?

Yes. If you want the offer sent to the lawyers, say so.

What if we are separated but not divorced yet?

You can still ask for an offer. Who must sign depends on the title and any court order, not on whether the divorce is final.
